Here is another of my archive interviews with celebrities to mark their birthdays. 11th December is the birthday of the singer-songwriter, guitarist, musician and producer, David Gates. PLEASE LIKE & SUBSCRIBE if you can. There are many more of these interviews on the channel and many more to come. David was the frontman and co-lead singer (with Jimmy Griffin) of the group Bread, which reached the top of the musical charts in Europe and North America on several occasions in the 1970s. The band was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. In the 1960's he moved to Los Angeles and continued writing songs, as well as working as a music copyist, a studio musician, and producer for many artists – including Pat Boone. Success soon followed. His composition "Popsicles and Icicles" hit No. 3 on the US Hot 100 for The Murmaids in January 1964. The Monkees recorded another of his songs, "Saturday's Child". By the end of the 1960s, he had worked with many leading artists, including Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin, Merle Haggard, Duane Eddy and Brian Wilson. Bread's first album was released in 1969. The band's hit singles included 'Make It with You', It don't matter to me', 'If', 'Baby I'm-a want you', 'Everything I Own', 'Diary', 'Aubrey', 'The guitar man', 'Sweet surrender'. Gates had solo success with singles including 'Part time love', 'Goodbye girl' and 'Never let her go'. In this excerpt he talks about leaving Tulsa, Oklahoma to try his luck in Los Angeles.
