Celebrating the publication of his new book Restitution: The Return of Cultural Artefacts, Alexander Herman is joined by Sir Alan Moses, Joint Chair of the UK's Spoliation Advisory Panel and a former Lord Justice of Appeal, and Professor Henrietta Lidchi, Head of Research and Collections, National Museum of World Cultures, The Netherlands, for a fascinating discussion of the broader themes around restitution and the conclusions of the book. The event is organised in association with Sotheby's Institute of Art and chaired by Gareth Fletcher. With new returns of cultural objects being announced on a weekly basis, the timing of this event - and the book's publication - couldn't be better. SPEAKERS Alexander Herman is Assistant Director of the Institute of Art and Law and co-directs the Art, Business and Law LLM developed with Queen Mary University of London. His articles on restitution appear regularly in The Art Newspaper. Sir Alan Moses is former Lord Justice of Appeal, a Court of Appeal Judge and the former chairman of Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO). He is joint Chair of the United Kingdom's Spoliation Advisory Panel, the body that hears claims brought against UK public institutions for the restitution of artwork lost or stolen during the Nazi era in Europe (1933-45). Professor Henrietta Lidchi is Head of Research and Collections at the National Museum of World Cultures in the Netherlands. Between 2019 and 2020, Professor Lidchi served on the Dutch national advice committee whose report 'Colonial Collections and a Recognition of Injustice' (Council for Culture, 2020) was commissioned to inform Dutch national policy on questions of restitution, repatriation and return. From 2005 to 2017, she was Keeper of the Department of World Cultures, National Museums Scotland. Gareth Fletcher is Programme Director, MA Art Logistics and Leader of the Art Crime online intensive course at Sotheby's Institute of Art, London. He sits on the Advisory Board for the Responsible Art Market (RAM) London Committee.
