Olivia Magoffin: Australian pilot delivering medical supplies, Pacific humanitarian corridor

Olivia is an Australian pilot based in Vanuatu with aircraft charter company Unity Airlines (owned and run by an Australian). Olivia has been working as a pilot on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Pacific. At the beginning of the crisis she was flying DNA samples to New Caledonia as there was no testing available in Vanuatu. She then flew medical supplies back in. When Cat 5 Tropical Cyclone Harold hit Vanuatu she started ferrying Australian humanitarian relief items and supplies across the country. She tells the story of an Australian making a difference by helping our closest Pacific neighbours through a major humanitarian crisis in the midst of a global health pandemic. Australia’s close friendship with Vanuatu spans 40 years of diplomatic relations and helping one another in the face of great challenges. Australia quickly adapted its existing development programs to support Vanuatu’s COVID-19 preparedness and response efforts. We then added over AUD $12 million to fund economic stimulus, health programs and quarantine costs. Our health support alone includes technical and medical staff/supplies, personal protective equipment and GeneXpert test cartridges so Vanuatu can test for COVID-19 in-country.
