Coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease in the United States. Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Mickyas Eskender said symptoms include chest pain and shortness of breath with physical activity. “The big thing is if it goes untreated, it can cause a heart attack. And patients can pass away from that. So, we do cabbage to prevent that. Or if patients do have a heart attack, we can do cabbage afterwards to help improve their quality of life.” A Coronary Artery Bypass or CABG is the most common surgery done at the Lee Health Heart Institute’s Shipley Cardiothoracic Center. "When we do a CABG, we open the chest, we take a piece of artery from the chest wall and some vein from the leg. And then we use that to go around or bypass the areas of disease in the patient's coronary arteries,” said Dr. Eskender. Not every patient with coronary artery disease requires surgery. CABG is usually reserved for patients with severe blockages in two or more arteries. The goal of the procedure is to provide their heart with enough oxygen and blood. After a short period of cardiac rehab, patients can return to their normal daily functions. “There's no activity restrictions after cabbage procedure once they're fully recovered from open-heart surgery,” said Dr. Eskender.
