KCSE PAPER ONE REVISION ORAL NARRATIVES Read the narrative below and answer the questions that follow. One afternoon, a big wolf waited in a dark forest for a little girl to come along carrying a basket of food to her grandmother. Finally, the little girl did come along and she was carrying the basket of food. "Are you carrying the basket to your grandmother?" asked the wolf. The little girl answered, "Yes, I am." So the wolf asked the girl where her grandmother lived. When the girl told him, he disappeared into the woods. When the little girl opened the door of her grandmother's house, she noticed there was somebody in bed with a night cap and a gown. She realised that it was the wolf so the little girl took the a gun from her basket and shot the wolf dead. (i) How will you ensure your audience remains glued to the story? a) I would wear a malicious look when asking the girl if she is carrying the basket to the grandmother. b) I would be audible when narrating the story c) I would employ tonal variation, e.g, my voice would fall when narrating how the girl shot the wolf dead. d) I would mimic the girl answering the wolf confidently and decisively "Yes, I am." e) I would place my hands on the head when dramatizing how the girl carried the basket on her head. f) I would regulate the pace of narrating the story. g) I would use a dramatic pause to show emphasis on how the girl found the wolf asleep on her grandmother's bed. (ii) How would you say the words of the wolf and the girl. Wolf "Are you carrying the basket to your grandmother's house?" ~ I would use a rising intonation since it requires a yes/no response from the girl. ~I would cunningly use a relaxed, cunningly tactful tone to avoid the girl's knowledge of my motive. ~ I would give a sincere look to alleviate any possibilities of the girl getting to know my real motive. The girl "Yes, I am" ~ I would employ a falling intonation to show finality of the response. ~ I would use a confident tone to assuage any fears of the wolf. ~ I would use a decisive tone to underscore the girl's naivety (iii) How would you prepare yourself effectively to tell the story a) Get prior information about the audience b) Get to know the likes and dislikes of the audience c) Prepare the props to be used during the narration. d) Prepare garments that depicts the content of a story like banana leaves or leopard skin that reflects the dark forest setting of the narrative. e) Get to the venue in time. f) Be clear on the level or type of language to use N/B; The above responses may also be relevant for other forms of stage performance like giving a speech or delivering a talk.
