This is quite an interesting recording. It shows how each of the composers used the relatively new musical instrument - the fortepiano. While Haydn and Mozart were relatively at ease with the capability of the instrument, Beethoven struggled against its limitations. As the cover notes discuss, Beethoven was constantly frustrated by the limits of the fortepiano. The piano music he was writing for piano often taxed the capacity of the fortepiano. His visions would not be fully realized until the fortepiano evolved into the modern piano. While this Beethoven piece sounds familiar, the dynamics of the fortepiano give it quite different sound than we are used to today. Leslie Tung gives an excellent performance and demonstrates how hard it was to realize Beethoven's musical vision on this early instrument. This recording is one of the few (only 3 out of 100 so far) that does not appear on Discogs.com. This implies that it is somewhat of a lost recording. Hopefully this will help to preserve this unique recording so that other can benefit from listening to it in the future. From what I can find on the internet, in 2021 Leslie Tung continues to be an exponent of the pianoforte - giving us a glimpse of what music sounded like over two centuries ago.
