What is Rebif?

Rebif injections contain the active ingredient interferon beta-1a, which is a type of medicine called an immunomodulator. It affects the way the immune system works. Rebif is used to remit multiple sclerosis in people who have had at least two relapses in the previous two years, as well as to treat patients who have experienced a ingle multiple sclerosis-like attack. MS is a condition in which the immune system attacks the myelin sheath that surrounds the nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord. This causes inflammation that stops the nerves working properly. It is not fully understood how interferon beta works in MS, but it has been shown to help reduce the number and severity of MS relapses, presumably by changing the way the immune system works.
