The command of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) is transitioning between two veteran ex-ZIPRA combatants: the outgoing General Philip Valerio Sibanda (born c. 1954) and the incoming General Emmanuel Matatu (born c. 1952). Sibanda, a possibly Karanga military figure who operated under the nom de guerre Ananias Gwenzi, received extensive training in Morogoro, Tanzania, and spent nine months with the PLO in Lebanon before commanding the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) from 2004 to 2017 and subsequently the ZDF. He is succeeded by the 73-year-old General Matatu, a Thekwane High School alumnus trained at the Zambian Military Academy (Kohima), whose rise is notable for maintaining ex-ZIPRA presence in a top structure historically dominated by ex-ZANLA commanders. Matatu advanced from ZNA Chief of Staff (Administration) to Lieutenant General and ZNA Commander in March 2025, culminating in his promotion to full General and ZDF Commander in November 2025.
