VetNews Round-Up | March 2023

Get your passes to Singapore Vet Show 2023: https://singapore.vetshow.com/registr... Welcome to the Singapore Vet News round up for the month of March, my role is to provide you with the latest news and trends within the APAC Vet market and abroad, don’t forget to subscribe to the SIngapore Vet YouTube channel to be the first to view each months round up. There has been a lot going on within the industry this past month so let me provide you with a few highlights... 1. Deadly feline cancer may soon have new treatment options thanks to a promising new treatment being tested in Canada. Morris Animal Foundation-funded researchers at Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), are exploring the use of porphysome nanotechnology combined with light therapy to treat oral squamous cell carcinoma in cats. Accounting for roughly eight to 10 percent of all cancers diagnosed, oral squamous cell carcinoma is the most common oral cancer in cats, Morris Animal Foundation reports. The tumors make eating and drinking difficult and are painful. Research lead Michelle Oblak, a veterinary surgeon oncologist and professor in OVC’s Department of Clinical Studies, hopes the findings will improve quality of life (QoL) and outcomes for cats diagnosed with the disease. You can view more at this link here and within the comments section of our video. Read more: https://www.veterinarypracticenews.co... 2. Spreading awareness of the mental health issues faced by veterinary professionals – Flynns Walk held in Melbourne, Australia Flynn's Walk is walking and talking to highlight the challenges many in the veterinary field face, spread awareness in the wider community and put the focus on well-being. Flynn’s Walk was founded in 2018 following the incredibly sad loss of veterinarian Dr Flynn Hargreaves. The walk was created to honour his memory, bring together the community and spread awareness of the mental health issues faced by veterinary professionals. Their aim is to help break down the stigma surrounding mental health challenges and suicide – both significant issues in the veterinary industry. By holding public walk events, they raise the profile of veterinary mental health and bring awareness to the community. They have upcoming events in Melbourne and Canberra and invite anyone associated with the veterinary industry to attend. Attend the next Flynn's Walk here: https://flynnswalkmel2023.eventbrite.... 3. World Veterinary Day is taking place this month on 29th April – the theme is promoting diversity, equity and inclusiveness in the veterinary profession. The 2023 theme is about celebrating efforts from veterinarians, veterinary associations and others to advocate for fairness and equity. World Veterinary Association (WVA) and HealthforAnimals chose the theme to help remove barriers and improve inclusiveness through diversity, equity and inclusion policies and practices. To celebrate veterinarians here at Singapore Vet, if you are a veterinarian and would like to attend Singapore Vet with a free pass, we want to hear from you. All you need to do is send in a short 60 second video telling us about your background in can include anything from where you were born, your culture, a bit about your childhood, where you studied, we want to hear it all. You can email your videos to [email protected].
