Was offered comp passes to a young music phenom I never heard of, but figured if Yoshi’s booked him he must be good judging by their club's track record alone. Justin-Lee Schultz is a 17 year old from South Africa who apparently signed his first record deal at 12. He has fusion level chops already (you decide if that’s good or bad) and his dad and sister are members of his band. For my pro musician friends his set reminded me of so many of the dozens of NAMM Show showcases I’ve seen before. Heavy on showing off musical skills and not so much on playing with freedom and the feel of the moment I personally desire in jazz/fusion music. But that observation is probably more about how spoiled I’ve been to see so many music masters live in my life, than on any poo-pooing on the kid not giving me goosebumps or heart-skipping thrills when the played. He’s a hell of a talented player no doubt, especially for his age, and props to him for all the obvious work he has put in and for what I’m sure will be continued well-earned success and suspect he will stretch out more (or shift to well crafted tight compositions where soloing isn't the feature) when the time is right for him and his career. So if a fusioned-up Michael Jackson cover that segues into Chick Corea’s Spain (pretty cool concept in my personal book) is your cup of tea then check out these clips. Most are covers, but he did start playing some originals in the middle of the set .
