Empire Road was a groundbreaking British TV drama series made by the BBC in 1978–1979, written by Michael Abbensetts and filmed largely in Birmingham. It was the first British television series predominantly written, acted and directed by Black artists, and focused on the everyday lives of African-Caribbean, East Indian and South Asian residents living on a diverse street in the city. The show blended real community stories, humour, family challenges, relationships and social themes with warmth and honesty, a kind of Coronation Street of its time for inner-city multicultural Britain. It was also a launchpad for notable actors including Norman Beaton, Joseph Marcell, Rosa Roberts and early appearances by Julie Walters. In Episode 4: Royston’s Day, the spotlight turns to Royston, whose everyday routine takes unexpected turns. As the community buzzes around him, we see how small events in a single day can reveal deeper tensions, personal hopes and the challenges facing young people on Empire Road. With its mix of heartfelt moments, local colour and ensemble cast interplay, this episode captures the ebb and flow of life on the street while adding depth to Royston’s character within the broader community tapestry.
