My 15 year old quarter horse mare 6 months after her neurectomy to treat chronic and treatment resistant navicular pain. Navicular syndrome is common in quarter horses and is likely due to her early cutting training and poor hoof angles (genetic). This surgery was a last resort after several years of exhausting all other options. Corrective shoeing, pour-in pads, monthly Adequen injections, daily Equiox. Coffin joint and navicular bursa injection effects lasted days or weeks. MRI imaging at the University of Illinois was done in 2021 to determine the location and severity of the damage. Moderate bony alterations and mild to moderate damage to the DDFL (deep digital flexor tendon). Her lameness had improved dramatically with the previous treatments, but was still moderate and obviously effecting her quality of life. Dr. Grey at the University of Illinois performed her surgery back in July of 2023. Rose recovered with no complications and was nearly perfectly sound. After equine body work was done 2 months post op, addressing lower back and hip pain from compensating for the chronic navicular, Rose is now fully sound.
