Clinical laboratory centralization (or consolidation) continues to be a common practice in both commercial and non-profit laboratories and health systems. Centralization has the potential to bring improvements in harmonization, quality, scope of test menu, specialty expertise, and costs. Risks include delays in turn-around-time, logistical challenges, and removal of the clinical laboratory as part of the core health care team within a hospital. This presentation reviews some core concepts of laboratory management as it pertains to laboratory centralization and highlights key examples from the literature and the University of Washington Medical Center-Northwest campus. After viewing this lecture, participants should be able to: 1. Discuss the goals of standardization, harmonization, and centralization of laboratory testing. 2. Identify top obstacles to centralization of laboratory testing. 3. Identify key components of successful centralization of laboratory testing.
