St Agnes feels a little wilder, a little more untamed than its neighbours—a place where the Atlantic makes its presence known at every turn, and where small paths lead to outsized views. With no cars, few people, and the sound of surf and seabirds filling the air, it’s an island that seems to slow time to its own gentle rhythm. 🕰️ Highlights, History & Local Lore Beginning near the quay, the walk quickly reveals St Agnes’ contrasts. To the south, the old lighthouse stands proudly on Wingletang Down, a reminder of the dangers of this seafaring corner. Around its base, heather and gorse stretch to the horizon, creating a wild, open heath that feels far removed from the manicured gardens of Tresco or the bustle of St Mary’s. Heading westward, the coastline grows craggier, with granite outcrops plunging into frothing seas. This is Scilly at its rawest—windswept headlands where seabirds nest and the Atlantic seems endless. But St Agnes also offers softer touches: the sheltered sands of Periglis Beach, the tidal causeway across to tiny Gugh, and the cluster of stone cottages that make up the island’s small community. St Agnes carries with it a sense of independence, both geographically and in spirit. With only a handful of residents, a single pub, and a scattering of farms, it feels more remote than it really is—just a short boat ride from St Mary’s, but a world apart in atmosphere. This walk is less about distance and more about immersion: in views, in history, in the sheer elemental force of a small island standing firm against the ocean. 📍 Walk Starting Point (What3Words): ///comedy.product.orders 🗺️ Full Map of All Walks, Drives, and My Ever-Growing To-Do List: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/1/edi... 📽️ Walk Stats • Walk #291 • Time: 11:50am – 29th April 2025, English Spring • Difficulty: ⭐ 1 / 5 • Beauty: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐6 / 5 • Steps: 6,169 • Distance: 3.24 Miles / 5.22 km • Weather: Perfect.
