A humidor is any kind of container or environment where you stabilize relative humidity and temperature. The main downside of a coolidor is the lack of a temperature-control element. [01:18] Container Types: First, you must choose a container, which must be airtight; be aware that many coolers are not. For example, the Coleman 120qt that you saw in the intro is not. It is like that by design, to prevent children who might get trapped inside from suffocating. Hence, if you use this cooler or a similar one, you'd need to retrofit it with an airtight gasket. It's easier to start with a cooler that has a gasket already, like the 87-quart Iris USA Remington. [03:41] Humidification: Then, you need to create a humidified climate inside the cooler. Our go-to solution is Boveda packs, which provide two-way humidification. This means that they release or absorb moisture depending on the relative humidity of the surrounding air. For large-volume storage, the 320g packs are ideal. We put six per Remington container. Technically, that's overkill, but you can't really "overdo" these; each pack will simply deplete slower. [04:27] Acclimation: It's a good idea to acclimate cigars before introducing them. [05:24] RH Monitoring: Next, you'll need something with which to check the interior humidity and, ideally, temperature. At minimum, you'll need a calibratable digital hygrometer, but we recommend a smart sensor. Our three favorites are the CigSor, SensorPush, and Boveda Butler. These devices record humidity and temperature. The main difference between the three is how close you need to be to check their readings. The CigSor is the most expensive (≈$225), but provides both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi functionality. The SensorPush, at $50, uses Bluetooth out of the box, so you'll only be able to check it while relatively nearby. However, you can buy a separate Wi-Fi gateway for $99. This will allow you to check all connected SensorPush devices over the internet. Finally, the Boveda Butler is only $20, comes with a calibration kit, and offers Bluetooth functionality. It's also capable of internet connectivity, by using a bridge device. The advantage of smart sensors is that, to check your humidors, you don't need to open and, therefore, unnecessarily disrupt their environments. [07:42] Cedar Trays: If you want to use cedar trays inside the coolidor, be sure to season them beforehand. Spanish cedar aids in repelling tobacco beetles, and serves as a humidity exchange membrane. If it's acclimated to 65% RH, for example, and the ambient humidity drops, the wood will release moisture. Also, Spanish cedar adds a pleasant aroma to your cigars. [09:09] Downsides: Coolidors lack a temperature-control mechanism. A cool basement is good for storage, but If you don't have a basement, heat spikes are a big concern. Heat is the main danger since going over 70°F (21°C) creates a risk of mold. In this case, you might look into cigar fridges or powered cabinets. REMEMBER to comment! What are your thoughts on coolidors and similar options?
