Marbella is one of the most important tourist cities on the Costa del Sol and is an all-year-round international tourist attraction, due mainly to its sunny, warm, dry climate, excellent tourist infrastructure and attractive surroundings. The Marbella municipality is divided into a number of districts occupying a strip of land 44 kilometres (27 miles) of coastline. Sheltered by the slopes of a coastal mountain range, Marbella has a large gap between its north and south sides, thus providing views of the sea and mountain vistas from almost every part of the city. Marbella boasts a diverse range of characteristics popular with almost every type of traveller and tourist: from the narrow streets and traditional whitewashed homes of the Old Town to the luxury megayachts and supercars of Puerto Banús, Marbella has long carried a reputation of being one of the biggest jet set destinations of all of Europe. All districts of Marbella vary in population density. Due to its international appeal and average 325 days of sunshine per year, the coastline is heavily urbanised; most of the land not built up with golf courses has been developed with small residential areas. Property types range from small apartments in large bloques from the property booms of the 1960s onwards, to sprawling luxurious villas set in acres of private grounds built for the rich and famous.
