From Stem Cells to CAR T Cells | City of Hope's Leadership in Hematological Malignancies

“Our philosophy has always been, don't be satisfied with what's available anywhere,” said Eileen Smith, M.D., chair of City of Hope’s Hematological Malignancies program. “Put together all the brightest minds and the best scientists and figure out what's a better way to do this for our patients now and for the patients in the future.” This was the ethos and attitude driving City of Hope scientists in 1976, when the institution started what was then one of only six programs in the country doing bone marrow transplants. Three physicians oversaw a 3-bed unit. That first year, they performed six transplants. More than four decades later, ingenuity and innovation — and that undercurrent of finding approaches that are a “better way” for patients now and into the future — have not only established City of Hope at the forefront of treatments for all hematologic cancers, but laid the groundwork for leadership in cellular immunotherapy, namely CAR T cell therapy. Today, City of Hope has performed more than 17,000 bone marrow transplants with exceptional survival rates, and more than 630 patients on multiple CAR T cell therapy trials targeting both solid tumors and hematologic malignancies.
