The moderate cleric was killed in a car bombing in August, which left more than 80 others dead, and over 140 wounded. Walking in procession, the faithful observed Ashoorah and carried banners and posters of al-Hakim, some ritually beating themselves in a gesture of devotion. Al-Hakim spent more than two decades in exile in Iran before returning to Iraq in May 2003. He formed the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, a prominent anti-Saddam group that advocated Islamic rule for Iraq. While al-Hakim denounced the US military occupation, he did not support violent resistance against it.
