Struggling with Water in the Italian Countryside (#93)

This summer in our corner of the Italian countryside, running water has been scarce — not because there’s no water, but because old, leaking mains pipes leave villages with only a few hours of supply each day. To make life here more resilient, we’re planning two 10,000-litre underground storage tanks: one for rainwater, one for mains. In the meantime, we’re hoping to reconnect an old cistern above the house to water the vegetable garden. Somewhere underground there’s a buried iron pipe that once carried the water down — and today, with help from some Instagram friends and a metal detector, we’re trying to find it. We're Isis & Bertus, a Belgian-Dutch couple. In the summer of 2023 we moved into a neglected farmhouse in a tiny village in the northwest of Italy.
