Born enslaved in Tennessee around 1832, Mary Fields lived a life America never expected. After emancipation, she worked tough jobs — washing dishes, laying bricks, hauling freight. But at 60 years old, she made history. In 1895, Mary became the first Black woman to work for the U.S. Postal Service. Known as Stagecoach Mary, she stood six feet tall, carried a rifle and a revolver, and drove her mail route through snowstorms, wolves, and thieves. She never missed a delivery — no matter the danger. In Montana towns, she became a legend. She smoked cigars, drank in saloons, and defied every stereotype of her time. Mary Fields wasn’t just a mail carrier — she was a frontier hero who proved freedom meant more than survival. It meant living bold and fearless in a nation that tried to deny her both. ⸻ 📚 Verified Sources: • Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture • Montana Historical Society Archives • U.S. Postal Service – African American Postal Pioneers • Library of Congress – Stagecoach Mary Photographs ⸻ 🎙️ Blackout History We don’t tell these stories to divide.
