A space below the diaphragm produced by the peritoneal folds around the liver. A portion of the abdomen which lies between the diaphragm above and the transverse colon and mesocolon below. (Portions) • supra-hepatic portion (upper): It is further divided by falciform ligament of the liver. - right: It is further divided by right lateral ligament of liver into anterior and posterior. - left • infra-hepatic portion (lower): It is further divided by free edge of lesser the omentum and descending part of the duodenum. - right: hepatorenal recess (subhepatic recess or pouch of Morison) - left: It is further divided into anterior (perigastric space) and posterior (omental bursa or lesser sac of the peritoneum) (Compartments) • Intraperitoneal compartment: The cavity surrounded by the peritoneum. • Extraperitoneal compartment: Small space between the diaphragm and the bare area of the liver.
