Scientists Say That The Earliest Europeans Were Not Who We Think

Few genomes have been sequenced from early modern humans, who arrived in Europe when it was already populated by Neandertals. An international team lead by researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology has sequenced the oldest contemporary human genomes to date. The genomes were discovered from seven individuals who lived 42,000-49,000 years ago in Ranis, Germany and Zlatý kůň, Czechia. These genomes belonged to members of a tiny, closely related human group that separated from the population that left Africa some 50,000 years ago and later inhabited the rest of the world. Although they separated early, the Neandertal DNA in their genomes traces back to a mixing event shared by all people outside Africa, which the researchers date to roughly 45,000-49,000 years ago, far later than previously assumed.
