In this video I do a tear down and test on a suspiciously cheap charger I got from AliExpress for only £1.80 with free shipping. It claims to be a 120w power delivery capable charger however it STINKS of fakery… literally, the charger absolutely reeks of capacitor electrolyte, none of the capacitors are obviously leaking, but the smell is strong enough I am sure (at least) one of them is. Before I get into the details of what I found inside the charger I want to explain my absence for the past while, I have been very busy with study, training and exams and just have not had the time to dedicate to hobbies like making videos. I have a few weeks of downtime now which I intend to take full advantage of, before I have to travel again for a block of practical assessments. I have a few more videos planned imminently, and some longer term projects on the back burner which I have been planning for months now, mostly waiting for appropriate parts to appear on eBay, or for me to gain the needed equipment. With that out of the way, this charger was far from the worst I have seen, to the surprise of nobody this charger was fake, and cannot provide anything like 120w, based on a FM3783HA driver manufactured by the curiously named “SHEN ZHEN FINE MAD ELECTRONICS GROUP CO., LTD.” which is a 2.1a switch mode driver IC. Aside from the blatantly fake ratings the charger itself was not horrendous, the isolation distance on the PCB was a good 3-4mm, less than it should be but better than other ones I've seen, sadly the suppression capacitor was only 1kv rated, although I did not notice that at first. The charger features popper fusible resistors and snubber networks to protect the transistor. Annoyingly the safety of the charger was ruined by the lack of a dip for the legs of the primary winding to recess into, meaning the secondary can touch it removing all isolation, despite it passing a 500v IR test I would not treat this power supply as properly isolated. This is far from a surprising outcome though, for £1.80 you cannot expect top quality, this does feel like a good time to mention that under no circumstances do I recommend you to use a charger like this, the safety risks are enormous. They are often very variable, so one may be fine, and another may be deadly even if purchased from the same seller. The only way to be sure the charger you have is safe is to buy a prominent brand though a reputable supplier. Generally any charger purchased from eBay, AliExpress, Temu or even Amazon should be considered suspect. I cannot recommend anywhere specific to buy them, as it will vary by country, but buying direct from a prominent manufacture is usually a good bet, I buy most of mine though the likes of RS and CPC. As usual any comments, suggestions or questions drop them in the comments below, and I will do my best to help! Thanks for watching, see you next time!
