Amsterdam Mayor Job Cohen officiated at the ceremony for three male couples and one female couple. The group wedding took place at midnight local (2000GMT) immediately after the law permitting gays to wed took effect. It was the climax of a 15-year campaign to allow gay couples equal rights under civil law. The legislation called the Act of Opening the Institute of Marriage easily passed through both houses of Parliament last year. The Netherlands is the first country to allow same sex couples to wed. Dutch marriage laws are the same are as for a marriage between man and woman. The couples will also be allowed to apply to jointly adopt a child in the Netherlands. The ceremony was held in Amsterdam's town hall Families and friends of the couples burst into applause after they took their vows. Then they kissed and embraced. Foreigners hoping to get married in the Netherlands will be disappointed. Only Dutch nationals or resident foreigners living with a Dutch partner are eligible for same-sex marriages.
