We think of J.R.R. Tolkien as the author The Lord of the Rings, but he thought of himself as the translator of this great work by Frodo Baggins. Here, on a rainy June morning in S.R. 1420 in the study at Bag End, you are witnessing Frodo in the very act of writing this epic in one of the three red books of lore Bilbo gave him in Rivendell. It is about six weeks after the wedding of Sam Gamgee and Rose Cotton, and the couple are there to take care of Frodo and his smial. What Frodo did was a monumental effort, with his lasting wounds from The War of the Ring, and his injured right hand. Honor to him for writing this work of hope for the future.
