Abstract——We provide a comprehensive review of blockchaintechnology applications, challenges, and trends facing the fieldof digital security and data integrity verification. We performa systematic review of over 60 peer-reviewed papers writtenbetween 2008 and 2024 and classify blockchain applications in thefollowing four key domains: Digital Content Integrity, IdentityManagement & Authentication, Secure Data Storage & Sharing,and Network Security & Intrusion Detection. Following our analysis conclusions, we reasoned that under controlled conditions,blockchain-based systems perform approximately 89%–100%accuracy in applications with multiple security objectives, butthese systems had difficulties in scaling, processing overhead (50ms–2500 ms), energy consumption, and interoperability acrossplatforms. We emphasize the significant gaps in our research,including quantum-resistant cryptography, real-time processing capabilities, privacy-preserving mechanisms, and universalformat-agnostic solutions. We also provide a multi-level referenceframework, which we propose to guide and inform system designin the future versus assuming readiness for deployment. Thisframework is used as a conceptual example for this architecture;the experimental demonstration is provided in the appendix. Theexperimental results are not intended to provide a benchmarkcomparison or an in-depth analysis of the current state quo butas a demonstration of the framework’s promise in context. Weprovide future research directions for the incorporation of postquantum cryptography, federated learning, optimization of edgecomputing, and standardized cross-chain protocols.
