Dr. Walter here, and I hope you're all doing well. Today, I want to address an important topic that many struggle with—depression. I've noticed that people often find it challenging to identify depression, whether in themselves or others. Depression, clinically known as Major Depressive Disorder, can range from mild to severe. To receive a diagnosis, an individual needs to experience several symptoms more days than not for at least two weeks. In this video, I'll guide you through the key signs of depression, helping you recognize if it might be affecting you or someone you care about. Here are some of the symptoms we'll cover: Depressed Mood: Feeling consistently unhappy with life circumstances. Anhedonia: Struggling to find joy in activities that once brought pleasure. Changes in Appetite: Typically, it leads to a loss of appetite, but sometimes it can trigger overeating. Sleep Pattern Changes: Most commonly, people experience insomnia, but some may oversleep. Lack of Motivation: Finding it challenging to muster the energy or drive for daily tasks. Physical Pain: Experiencing difficulties in physical movements, known as psychomotor retardation. Feelings of Guilt: Unwarranted guilt, especially for things that aren't your fault. Thoughts of Death and Suicide: A concerning symptom that should never be ignored. Attention and Concentration Problems: Struggling with focus and attention. Remember, one doesn't need to have all these symptoms; a few are enough to warrant concern. The good news is that depression is a treatable condition, and seeking help can make a significant difference in one's life. I hope this video helps you better understand depression and its symptoms. If you have any questions or topics you'd like me to cover in future videos, please feel free to ask. Take care, and I look forward to our next conversation.
