So much hearsay, so many myths, and so very few facts surround this one product that it's almost difficult to know where the great misunderstanding comes from. Calci sand has developed its own cult of avid haters, and it has done so for seemingly good reason: what better cause to boycott something than it doing exactly that which it promises not to, being that it pertains to be "impaction safe"? In today's video, I tackle the many misnomers head on. Although calci sand remains a bad substrate in terms of recreating wild environments, if (and only if) your reptile is otherwise healthy, there is no real reason to suppose that it should cause impaction. ("What is impaction?" Impaction, in this case, refers to the blocking of the digestive system of one of our animals caused by eating the substrate. This may occur accidentally over time or purposefully in a short space of time - please read the pinned comment!) The science all points towards calci sand actually being fairly innocuous, despite the many stories of leopard geckos and bearded dragons being killed by it. So how does this add up? The fact of the matter is that, unfortunately, most reptiles in captivity are not "otherwise healthy". This is why calci sand presents such an issue as it does. HOWEVER, this - which is the crux of this video - does not mean that the aggressive gang warfare against calci sand is either necessary or productive. The main message of this video is not intended to be that calci sand is a good substrate: quite the contrary. Rather, the deeper importance of this video is in illustrating that for our community to continue moving forwards, we must reconsider our approach to learning about how to care for reptiles. Think about this as you watch the video. [DISCLAIMER: I still DO NOT believe that calci sand is a particularly good substrate. The main purpose of this video is not get you to use it - as I say, there are many superior alternatives - but rather to open your eyes to the fact that not everybody on the Internet knows what they are talking about. Moreover, it is to teach you that the biggest problems facing reptiles in captivity are usually driven not by a single product but the cumulative effects of several faults in husbandry, ultimately resulting in under-energised animals.] Also, if you want to read a little bit more about this, Pete Hawkins has written up on the subject: http://reptilenetworks.co.uk/2019/11/...
