Here’s a complete, normal difficulty run of Super Earth Defense Force for the Super Famicom, played on a Sony Trinitron CRT for that unmistakable retro glow. This playthrough was run on a Super NT and controlled with an 8BitDo arcade stick using a Brooks Wingman SNES wireless receiver—just enough modern convenience to keep things smooth without losing the old-school feel. I also bumped the player shields to 5 because dang, the game is hard. I think EDF is one of the more overlooked horizontal shooters of its time, often buried under bigger names like Gradius III or Axelay, but it holds its own with a distinct identity. There are no power-up drops mid-stage—your weapon choice happens before the level begins, and picking the right one is crucial. Each stage throws different enemy patterns and obstacles at you, so planning ahead matters. The game’s difficulty is no joke. You’ve got a shield instead of lives, and once they're gone, it’s game over. It’s a tight, focused challenge that taxes the player without feeling cheap. The soundtrack is a highlight—punchy, energetic, and surprisingly atmospheric for a game that didn’t get much spotlight, especially in the later stages (and during the credits). Stages are varied and memorable, from orbital battles to planetary dives, each with its own rhythm and visual style. If you’re into retro shooters or just want to see a lesser-known gem played in its intended visual context, this one’s worth a look. #SuperEarthDefenseForce #SuperFamicom #RetroGaming #SHMUP #SonyTrinitron #CRTgaming #ArcadeStick #UnderratedGames #RetroShooter #16bitGaming #RetroSoundtrack
