The 2024 BMW i4 eDrive40 brings sporty performance and engaging driving dynamics to the electric vehicle segment. As the latest addition to BMW's electric i range, the i4 combines the design and handling that BMW is known for with next-generation EV technology. At first glance, the i4 bears a strong resemblance to the brand's iconic 4 Series coupe, with its long hood, sloping roofline and short rear deck. But a closer look reveals aerodynamic tweaks like a mostly enclosed kidney grille to optimize efficiency. The i4 rides on BMW's flexible CLAR platform, which allows for either gas or electric powertrains. The eDrive40 model packs a Rear-mounted electric motor producing 335 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. Power goes directly to the rear wheels, with no mechanical connection between the motor and wheels. This allows for rapid acceleration - BMW says 0-60mph comes in just 5.7 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 118mph. The lithium-ion battery pack is mounted low in the chassis to aid handling. It has a useable capacity of 83.9 kWh, which BMW estimates will deliver up to 300 miles of range on a full charge. Using a Level 2 charger, it can replenish up to 90 miles of range in just 10 minutes. DC fast charging adds up to 110 miles in 10 minutes. On the road, the i4 delivers the exhilarating performance BMWs are known for. Acceleration is instantaneous when you bury your right foot, pinning occupants against their seatbacks. The low center of gravity from the battery pack contributes to agile handling and precise steering. Overall the i4 maintains the brand's emphasis on driver engagement, despite its eco-friendly powertrain. Ride quality remains comfortable thanks to standard adaptive dampers. The driver can tailor the suspension, powertrain and steering feel through multiple modes. For maximum efficiency, there's the new efficient "B" setting that preconditions the cabin while charging and analyzes navigation routes to optimize energy usage. The i4's interior will be familiar to BMW fans, with its driver-focused layout and premium finishes. The cabin looks slick and modern with its curved display panel housing a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and 14.9-inch central touchscreen. Fully digital operation allows for intuitive controls and over-the-air software updates. Front seats are comfortably sculpted and offer heating, ventilation and massage functions. Materials use more sustainable components like recycled plastics and natural leather tanned with olive leaves. Standard tech features include navigation, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a Harman Kardon surround sound system, wireless charging and driver assistance systems. The optional Parking Assistant Plus enable remote parking via smartphone. Cargo space is decent for a coupe at 9.0 cubic feet in back and 0.7 cubic feet in the front trunk. Rear seats can fold in a 40/20/40 split to accommodate larger items. Pricing for the 2024 BMW i4 eDrive40 starts at $55,400 plus a $995 destination fee. That positions it at a premium over rivals like the Tesla Model 3 and polestar 2. However it offers standout driving dynamics and brand cachet its competitors can't match.
