A Johnson County firefighter is recovering after a man attacked him with a sword outside a Wrightsville convenience store early Monday morning in what police called a bloody and violent attack. Chad Wombles, 46, had just come out of the Sidetrack gas station on East College Street around midnight and was talking with Wrightsville Police Officer Jay Hood in the parking lot when Diamond Seltzer, 32, of Washington County, attacked him without warning. Police say Seltzer pulled up in a gray 2008 Hummer H3, parked at the gas pumps and started walking toward the store entrance. He then pulled a Wakizashi sword from his waistband and attacked Wombles from behind, swinging at his head and neck. Wombles ducked under the first swing and got into a physical altercation with Seltzer. Seltzer knocked Wombles to the ground and continued swinging the sword, causing life-threatening injuries, police say.
