Baseball fans know all about Game One of this series. They know how the course of the game, and quite possibly the outcome of the game, was altered by then 12-year-old Jeffrey Maier reaching over the right field wall, and pulling a ball hit by Derek Jeter into the seats that Orioles Right Fielder Tony Tarasco most likely would have caught. They know that, somehow, Richie Garcia, the umpire down the Right Field line, completely missed this event, and called it a home run. What they might know is this: Had that call been made correctly (Jeter should have been ruled out), there would have been two outs, and nobody on base in the Bottom of the 8th, with the Orioles still leading by a run. Had everything else in the game happened the same way, the Orioles would have captured Game One. Most fans forget that they actually DID win Game Two. How different would this series have looked with Baltimore leading 2-0, going home to Camden Yards, instead of being tied 1-1? Of course, the "what-if" game is a fairly useless endeavor, as there are so many variables that it's impossible to know what would have happened, but it's worth mentioning. Who knows, maybe Baltimore still would have lost all three games at home, and the Yankees would have won it back in the Bronx?
