Exercise is good for us … we all know that. However, exercise becomes even more important as we get older but some of the things we used to do hurt more so we can easily fall into a sedentary lifestyle. It comes down to 2 choices …. STOP altogether or modify what you're doing. Telling someone who has arthritis to exercise or exercise more could be met with a sting of expletives. However …. The American College of Rheumatology guidelines suggests that … …”exercise should be one of the mainstays of treatment for osteoarthritis of the hip and knee” It is also, in the medical community, an agreed upon belief that exercise and arthritis should and can coexist. The research shows us that people who have arthritis but exercise regularly have less pain, more energy, better sleep and much better day-to-day function. This has multiple benefits that go beyond physical and into the area of good mental health … you know ENJOYING LIFE! So what are the best exercises for arthritis? I would first answer that with another question … what do you like to do? Whether you have arthritis or not, doing things that you actually enjoy increases the likelihood that you will be consistent in doing them and that right there is the key … CONSISTENCY. Outside of what you enjoy, other mild exercises that can help to keep you active while not aggravating arthritic symptoms are: Walking - it’s free, low impact, nearly any one of any fitness level can walk AND you do not need any equipment and you can make it a social event Yoga - another low impact activity that will also help you to build strength, improve the function of your joints, help to reduce inflammation of the joints which will greatly reduce your pain that is caused by arthritis Water Aerobics - since water supports body weight, water aerobics is an excellent way to get a bit more of a strength workout in without loading already sore, inflamed joints. Most community rec centers have water aerobics classes or if you do not like a class environment check out the pool schedule for times when you can go do a couple easy laps or even just walking the width of the pool in the shallow end. *** try to find heated pools as the warmer water is very soothing on the joints Hand Stretches Arthritic hands can make every day simple tasks difficult and painful. Doing some hand stretches regularly and throughout the day can really help to alleviate your pain and support keeping your hands nimble and adept at doing everyday tasks... example of “BIG FIVE TO FIST shown in video. Will exercise alone eliminate all your pain? Maybe not, however done consistently can reduce your need for prescribed meds or at least allow you to stick with over the counter pain relief and probably for less often than if you were not regularly exercising.
