The Winter War is usually remembered as one of the great underdog stories of the twentieth century. A small nation fighting for survival, Finnish ski troops moving through frozen forests, and Soviet divisions collapsing in the snow. But the real story was far darker than the legend. Desperate close-range fighting on the Mannerheim Line, and men on both sides pushed into a level of physical and psychological brutality that most retellings barely touch. In this video, I cover the full reality of the Winter War from the disaster on the Raate Road and the destruction of Soviet formations in central Finland to the artillery hell of the Karelian Isthmus, the myth and reality of Simo Häyhä, the human cost of the fighting, and the deeper reason this short war mattered so much. Because what happened in Finland between 1939 and 1940 did not stay in Finland. It shattered the Red Army’s reputation, helped convince Hitler that the Soviet Union could be destroyed in one campaign, and became one of the most important preludes to the catastrophe of the Eastern Front. #documentary #history #ww2 #education Patreon / historyatwar Help Support Us: Your donations help improve our channel and enhance the quality of our historical content. ❤️ https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted... 🎵Music: 'Decoherence' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au 'Memories of Stone' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au Disclaimer: The opinions and comments expressed in the 'Comments' section do not reflect the views of HistoryAtWar.
