An interview with Douglas "Doug" Hegdahl III, is featured in the documentary Return With Honor (1998). Doug Hegdahl was imprisoned at the infamous Hoa Loa Prison (AKA the Hanoi Hilton) after he was blown overboard from his ship, the USS Canberra. While in captivity, Hegdahl memorized the names of 256 prisoners to the tune of "Old McDonald Had a Farm." Hegdahl acted so dimwitted around his captors that they nicknamed him "the Incredibly Stupid One". While performing his duties of sweeping the prison grounds, Hegdahl dumped dirt into the fuel tanks of his captors' trucks. He managed to disable at least five. Hegdahl was also able to pass notes to prisoners. After convincing the guards that he needed glasses, Hegdahl was escorted out of the prison to get a pair. During the ride, Hegdahl memorized the layout of the prison and its position in the city of Hanoi. It was Major Joseph Crecca, USAF, who helped Hegdahl learn the names of 256 prisoners. Hegdahl and two other American servicemen were released from captivity on 5 August 1969. Once released, Hegdahl shared critical information with the State Department. This included the names of 256 prisoners. Scores of these men were listed as missing in action prior to Hegdahl's release. Hegdahl would later confront the North Vietnamese about the treatment of POWs at the Paris Peace Talks.
