“I wanted to challenge myself. I knew I wanted to put myself in a better position as a newly commissioned officer. I figured there was no other place to take opportunities and learn to flourish. I liked the family aspect of VMI and the alumni connections that come from time spent at VMI.” Julia Ward ’26 entered VMI as a Peay Scholar with goals of majoring in engineering, playing an NCAA Division I sport, and commissioning into the United States Navy. What she found at the Institute was a system, traditions, and a community that not only allowed her to reach those goals but pushed her to grow as a leader and gain confidence in herself. “Knowing that every single person that's come before me, the men and women that have gone through the same matriculation process, the same Rat Line, knowing that we kind of have that shared experience — it's very comforting.” Learn more about Julia’s journey — and the paths of other cadets — at vmi.edu/iamvmi Ready to accept the challenge of No Ordinary College for yourself?
