San Jose chiropractor Dr. William Holdsworth DC from Pain Relief Chiropractic explains a relationship between leg fidgeting and arterial health. Fidgeting while sitting can protect the arteries in legs and may even prevent arterial disease. In this study, researchers compared vascular function in the leg of eleven healthy young men and women before and after three hours of sitting. Researchers asked participants to fidget one leg intermittently—tapping one foot for one minute and then resting it for four minutes while keeping the other leg still. The research team then measured the blood flow in the lower leg and found that the fidgeting leg had a significant increase in blood flow, while the stationary leg experienced reduced blood flow. However, they caution that fidgeting is not a substitute for walking and exercise. Lead author Dr. Jaume Padilla notes, "You should attempt to break up sitting time as much as possible by standing or walking. But if you're stuck in a situation in which walking just isn't an option, fidgeting can be a good alternative. Any movement is better than no movement."
