From Band-Aids to Best Practices: USAA's Network Automation Journey This presentation explores the evolution of network automation at USAA, highlighting the journey from manual CLI-based configuration to an automated, configuration-as-code approach. We'll delve into the initial automation efforts around end-to-end rack provisioning, while addressing its limitations in maintainability and Day 2 operations. We'll discuss the challenges encountered with standalone Ansible playbooks, including the need for extensive testing. Then, we'll cover how we started using Arista AVD (Architect, Validate, Deploy) to streamline, standardize and automate Day 2 changes, while also significantly speeding up our Day 1 provisioning efforts. The presentation will showcase the benefits of adopting AVD, and our ongoing efforts to retrofit existing environments. Looking ahead, we aim to integrate Arista Cloud Test (ACT) and Arista Network Test Automation (ANTA) into a comprehensive pipeline. We'll also discuss the challenges of training network engineers on automation tools like Ansible and Git, as well as securing management buy-in for AVD. Attendees will gain insights into our experiences, lessons learned, and practical strategies for implementing network automation at scale. #networkautomation #configurationascode #arista #avd #anta
