"Aşkı Seninle Tattı Hicranla Yandı Gönül" (My heart tasted love with you, but burned with sorrow) is a Turkish song composed by Fehmi Tokay with lyrics by Melahat Akan, in the Hicaz makam (mode) and Düyek usul (rhythm). The song's lyrics talk about the pain of a heart that has tasted love with its beloved but is now burning in longing and sorrow. Fehmi Tokay was born in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul in 1889. His mother was the director of the Harmanlik School and his father was an auditor at the State Auditing Board. Tokay graduated from the Ravza-i Terraki Elementary School in Üsküdar, and then attended middle and high school at the Toptasi Military Rüşdiyye. He went on to study at the Mühendishane-i Berri Humayun, now known as the Technical University, graduating in 1920 due to the war. Tokay worked as an engineer and chief engineer for the Ministry of Public Works in provinces such as Kocaeli, Ankara, Bolu, and Çankırı, and was appointed deputy director of the Bridges Department in 1938. He retired while serving as a consultant for the Ministry of Public Works. Tokay's musical career began at a young age, influenced by his father and other esteemed musicians of the time. He composed his first piece, "Gulle hembezm-i visaliz gerçi hâr olsak da biz," in the Tahirbuselik mode at the age of 52. Tokay's most productive period was between 1941 and 1945, during which he composed 69 pieces. From 1946 until his death in 1959, he only composed 30 pieces. Despite having a beautiful voice and delivering beautiful performances, Tokay did not know how to read music. His compositions were transcribed by Dr Nevzat Atlığ and Alaettin Yavaşça. Although he did not leave behind many works, his compositions all possess a deep and solid artistic structure. Tokay was mainly influenced by Haci Arif Bey and never made commercial songs. Turkish Lyrics Aşkı seninle tattı hicranla yandı gönül. Evvel coştu taştı da şimdi uslandı gönül. Cevri safaya kattı hayli aldandı gönül. Evvel coştu taştı da şimdi uslandı gönül. English Translation My heart tasted love with you, but burned with sorrow. At first, it overflowed and now it has calmed down. It added pain to pleasure and was deceived a lot. At first, it overflowed and now it has calmed down.
