Banff Skoki Loop Backpacking Adventure | 3 Days in the Skoki Valley Canada Follow us on an amazing 3-day backpacking trip around the most famous loop in Banff National Park: The Skoki Loop. This Loop Trail traces its roots to the early 1930s, when the area became a hub for backcountry recreation. Skoki Lodge, built in 1931 and opened in 1933, marked North America’s first backcountry ski lodge, drawing adventurers with its rustic log cabins and alpine access. The surrounding trail network, including passes like Packer’s Pass and historic stops like the Halfway Hut from the 1930s, evolved into the classic multi-day backpacking loop through Skoki Valley’s lakes and meadows. Parks Canada developed the Skoki area post-1885 park establishment, which displaced Indigenous groups like the Tsuut’ina and Blackfoot, while later facilitating cultural access. Trails like the Merlin Lake Loop were built in the 1940s by stonemason Lawrence Grassi, enhancing the lollipop-shaped route around Fossil and Skoki Mountains. We enjoyed the loop by stopping at all FOUR backcountry campgrounds: Hidden Lake Campground, Baker Lake Campground, Red Deer Lakes Campground & Merlin Meadows Campground. This video shows you all of the campgrounds you can enjoy while backpacking the loop with a short mention of the Skoki Lodge. We took the route direct to Baker Lake on the first day by stopping near Hidden Lake, the Halway Hut, Boulder Pass & stopping to enjoy the views around Ptarmigan Lake. The trail continues into valley leading all the way down to Baker Lake where the larger campground gave us alot of surprises while exploring. The second day we got rained on during most of it but we still got to record the last two backcountry campgrounds while taking the shortcut of the loop via the Skoki Mountain route. We did settle camp at Merlin Meadows and were able to do a little bit of exploring in that area when the rain stopped. Our last day, we we're truly amazed by the Packers Pass that lead us literally through a rockwall to reach Myosotis Lake. This stunning little forum reminded me of the Lake O'Hara area with various platforms with another lake called Zygadenus Lake. Surrounded by amazing mountains and glaciers we climbed out of the forum via the Packers Pass leading back towards Lake Louise to complete our intense 3-day adventure.
