These Australian shorebirds are a common sight on a great deal of Australia's coastline. Small, sooty black birds with red eye rings and bills (though I find it more orange than red). Sooty oystercatchers are medium-sized shorebirds between 46 - 49 cm in length. They can be found pretty much all around the coastline of Australia on sandy beaches, rocky shorelines, and muddy estuaries. There are 12 species of oystercatchers in the world; Sooty Oystercatchers are endemic to Australia. The sooty oystercatcher's bill is between 5 and 8 cm long and flattened from the sides with razor-sharp edges that are perfect for tearing the flesh of muscles, clams, and oysters, which make up part of their diet. Sooty oystercatchers are very timid birds that will not let you come to about..hmmm, 10 meters of them normally. As soon as you start to approach them, they will let out a peeping sound and they will continue to do this until you either go away, or they just fly off. Sooty oystercatchers are amazing little birds and they are one of my favorite shorebirds. Thank you for watching this Birds of Australia video today.
