Maple Syrup Urine disease is an autosomal recessive inherited condition that causes a characteristic maple syrup urine odor. Other signs and symptoms include psychomotor delay and feeding issues in early life. This condition is caused by a deficiency of an enzyme important in branch chain amino acid metabolism. This leads to increases in branch chain amino acid levels and dysregulation of neurotransmitter synthesis in the brain of affected individuals. There are several subtypes of maple syrup urine disease including classic, intermittent, and intermediate, which we discus in this lesson. I hope you find this lesson helpful.
