Is Alternative education better than mainstream education?

The current education system in our country is not equipped to handle the diversity of children that are a part of it. The system not knowing any better resorts to standardised testing, corporal punishment and standardised methods of teaching and learning. This mass standardisation leaves no scope for children to think independently. The child is constantly waiting to be given orders so that he/her can follow them to his/her best ability. Is there room for children to make decisions? to create his own projects? follow their interests? In a world where the world needs the most important skill set which of creating and innovating; are we really prepping our kids for that in our mainstream system?
