California's Coachella Valley is probably the date capitol of the United States. A big reason for that is the former Valerie Jean Dates and Shields Date Gardens. Valerie Jean was the first to market dates directly to consumers, and their roadside stand is credited with popularizing a lot of the ways dates are enjoyed today. Located in Valerie, CA, which is near Thermal, the V Valerie Jean Date Shop was a popular stop on Highway 99 for over 50 years. Long since closed, the building is listed as California Historical Landmark. About 11 miles away from Valerie Jean on Highway 111 is Shields Date Gardens, which has been at its current location since the 1950s and is an extremely popular attraction in Indio, CA. Shields farms have been around nearly a century, and their date gardens features a restaurant, gift shop, a 17 acre garden, and a theater dedicated to showing the film, The Romance and Sex Life of the Date.
