On 9 February 2026, we joined the ASPIRE community for the programme’s closing celebration and book launch. The day marked the conclusion of a body of work focused on widening access to doctoral education and strengthening the conditions in which Black scholars can thrive, progress, and lead within academia. Alongside reflections from institutional leaders and patrons, we hear directly from ASPIRE scholars, whose testimonies make clear what it takes to build credible pathways into doctoral study: mentorship, sustained support, and an environment that treats talent as something to be developed and protected, not merely discovered. This event also launched a new book capturing ASPIRE’s learning and legacy, ensuring the programme’s methods, evidence, and outcomes remain part of the public record beyond its funded lifespan. Featuring contributions from: • Dr Ifedapo Francis Awolowo (ASPIRE Programme Lead) • Professor Liz Mossop (Vice-Chancellor, Sheffield Hallam University) • Professor Charles Egbu (Patron; Vice-Chancellor, Leeds Trinity University) • Dr Alison Lowe (Deputy Mayor of West Yorkshire for Policing and Crime) • Dr Jonathan Neves (Independent Evaluation Reflections) • Professor Seun Kolade (Professor of Entrepreneurship and Digital Transformation, Sheffield Hallam University) • Book review reflections from Professor Doug Cleaver • Professor Conor Moss, Executive Dean of the College of Business, Technology and Engineering Sheffield Hallam • ASPIRE scholars and project partners Filmed in collaboration with African Voices Platform (AVP).
