His sublime landscapes, bewitching figures, and ethereal illustrations graced the walls of office buildings and hotels, adorned magazine covers, and breathed life into advertisements and children's books. Born as Frederick Parrish in Philadelphia in 1870, he chose the name Maxfield in honor of his Quaker grandmother. His father, Stephen, was both an artist and his greatest inspiration. Maxfield initially pursued architecture, a passion that would later infuse his art with structural harmony. In 1895, he joined his life with Lydia, his beloved wife. Daybreak, an exquisite masterpiece and arguably his most renowned piece, was crafted for the art print market and continues to enrapture audiences today. Fate, however, would soon cast its shadow upon Maxfield. In 1900, he was afflicted with tuberculosis and suffered a nervous breakdown. It was during this period that he transitioned from illustration to oil painting, imbuing his work with a luminous quality that would captivate viewers for decades. Maxfield sought solace in the arid warmth of Arizona to heal his ailing body. Amidst the vast, sun-kissed landscapes, he found renewed purpose, accepting commissions for a series of captivating landscapes. Embracing his newfound calling, Maxfield traveled and painted, elevating his artistry to new heights. Nestled within the picturesque surroundings of Cornish, New Hampshire, Maxfield's abode, The Oaks, offered both sanctuary and inspiration. It was a haven for visitors during the warm summers, while the frigid winters became a cocoon for Maxfield's unyielding dedication to his art. Fate wove another thread into Maxfield's life in 1905 when he met Susan Lewin, a 16-year-old girl employed as a nanny for his son Dillwyn. Her visage graced his paintings throughout the 1920s, and over time, she evolved from muse to assistant and ultimately, his lover. As his bond with Susan deepened, his connection with Lydia, his wife, withered, leading to their separation in 1911. Susan remained by Maxfield's side for another 50 years. In the twilight of his career, from the 1930s until 1960, Maxfield Parrish devoted his focus to capturing the essence of the world around him in a series of calendar landscapes. Yet, the mystical allure of otherworldly realms remained a constant presence in his work.
