The S-Curve has a prominent place in the history of photographic composition, as well as most other forms of two-dimensional art. I would like to show you in this video how I use the S-Curve to help people ‘travel’ through the picture space. It’s true that you may already know about the S-Curve, as it‘s usually one of the first things that you learn in a photographic theory class. Fundamentals however should be repeated from time to time so that they become second nature. I took this photo of a mountain trail and traditional Japanese buildings this past February while in Nagano, Japan. This is the trail that takes us to “Hell Valley” (Jigokudani) which is where the snow monkeys live. It’s called Hell Valley due to the sulfurous steam that comes out of the earth. Very atmospheric! Our Japan Photo Tour group visits this area each year and always come back with great images. Check out www.markhemmings.com and tap on Nagano within my portfolio for more photos within this Japanese mountain range.
