Davis, Oklahoma September 26, 2014 HWY14MH014 This three-dimensional animated reconstruction shows the sequence of events in the accident, which occurred about 9:05 p.m. on September 26, 2014 on Interstate 35 (I-35) in a rural area near Davis, Oklahoma. The accident location is about midway between Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and the Dallas Fort Worth area of Texas. Two vehicles were involved in the accident. The first vehicle was a 2013 Peterbilt truck- tractor in combination with a 2014 Great Dane refrigerated semitrailer, which was traveling north. The second vehicle was a 2008 Champion Defender 32-passenger medium-size bus, which was traveling south. After negotiating a slight rightward curve at a speed of about 72 mph, the truck departed the left lane and entered the 100-foot- wide median, travelling over 1,100 feet without evidence of braking or steering. The truck then entered the southbound lanes of I-35 and collided with the medium-size bus. Following the impact, the medium-size bus rolled onto its right side, and the truck-tractor continued off the roadway into a wooded area. The animation illustrates the overall accident sequence leading to the collision between the vehicles. The motions of the vehicles shown in the animation are based on a reconstruction of the accident from physical evidence, including recorded data and three-dimensional survey data of the terrain, tire marks, ground scars and vehicle final rest positions, coupled with physics-based computer simulations. These computer simulations used models of the vehicles and their interactions during the accident to calculate the best match of the simulation to the physical evidence and reconstruct the sequence of events. The animation does not depict the weather or visibility conditions at the time of the accident. The animation includes a brief voice-over narration. The animation of the crash sequence is shown from two different views. The first view follows the truck traveling northbound on I-35 in the left travel lane. The truck departs the travel lanes to the left, crossing rumble strips, and continues through the 100-foot- wide median. The truck-tractor then enters the southbound lanes of I-35 and collides with the left side of southbound medium-size bus. Following the collision, the medium- size bus rolls onto its right side. The truck continues across the roadway onto the shoulder, and is stopped by large trees. The second view follows the medium-size bus, traveling southbound on I-35. The truck is shown approaching from the left across the median and striking the medium-size bus, causing the bus to roll over onto its right side. The truck-tractor continues across the roadway onto the shoulder, and is stopped by large trees. Narration: First view: This view shows the truck northbound in the left lane of Interstate 35. The truck departs the travel lane and traverses the 100-ft-wide median before entering the southbound lanes and striking the left side of the bus. Second view: This view shows the bus southbound on Interstate 35. Just after the third lane ends and merges into the two travel lanes, the truck is shown approaching in the median. The impact then occurs, causing the bus to roll over onto its right side.
