In flight, these synchronised groups resemble swirling clouds of smoke or a single giant organism. "Roller-Feeding": To maximise efficiency, the birds at the back of a ground-feeding flock constantly leap-frog over those in the front to reach fresh seeds, creating a "rolling wave" effect. Intense Colonialism: They breed in vast colonies where a single tree may hold over 6,000 nests. One recorded colony in Zimbabwe was 20 km long and 1 km wide. Nomadic Migrations: They are highly nomadic, following rainfall fronts to find newly ripened grass seeds. Some individuals have been recorded travelling over 2,000 km in a year.
