A playthrough of the boss Dark Kahn in the PS3 port of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe/MK vs. DC Universe. This is one of the many times recently where I’m really glad I stepped away for a while, as a lot has happened in the hacking community since and I can finally get back to and cover things I couldn’t look at before. I kind of have a weird psychological association with Dark Kahn and MK vs. DC in that way; to me it kind of encapsulates and represents the earlier frustrations of boss-hacking and that kind of weirdly elitist, clique-y community around it who I’ve always really actually kinda despised. I tried to hack MK vs. DC for years but had no luck, annoyingly. Thankfully, Reptiloid’s excellent effort here makes Dark Kahn freely playable for all to use playable, and being able to finally cover this in a way somewhat allows me to move past that in a way Then there’s the game itself, which I’ve always had pretty mixed feelings on. After MK Armageddon, which had a pretty mixed reputation and legacy, Mortal Kombat having a fighting game against the DC Universe just felt a bit on the nose; a way to try and have their own Marvel vs. Capcom but without nearly the same refinement or interest, and long after the crossover craze. Ironically of course, we’d eventually end up getting a couple of very solid DC fighting games (more on those later), but MK vs. DC is one of those odd things where it’s kind of the worse of both worlds, really. The roster isn’t huge, most of the MK elements have been stripped back to appeal to the censors, and in generally it just feels a little…off? A bit glossy, a bit weirdy stripped back from being MK, where it nothing feels particularly MK nor DC, and so doesn’t really satisfy either group of fans as a result. Chalk and cheese, basically. And then there’s the fact that Midway went bankrupt only a few months after the game was released, scrapping all the DLC in turn. At the time I remember feeling a bit done with MK, that it was maybe not dead as such but that it was probably a bit of a legacy series at this point and didn’t really have anywhere to go. And then of course we got the still absolutely fantastic MK9 so, hey, you never know when things can turn around. But yeah, even now I tend to forget that MK vs. DC even exists because it feels just a bit pointless and feels like a bit of nadir of the franchise. Then there’s the bosses. So, intriguingly, this system here actually influenced MK9, which I often tend to forget. Likewise, it introduced the standard of a story mode in the later titles, so we have to thank it for that too I suppose. You have two potential sub-bosses (Shao Kahn and Dark Seid), and then the creatively titled Dark Kahn, a character unique to this game. Shao and Seid are unlockable (which is neat, and appreciated) while Dark Kahn is infamously completely unplayable. So how is Dark Kahn? As you’d imagine, he’s pretty tough, but definitely not the most broken boss we’ve ever seen. He doesn’t have a lot of combos, however, he has a kind of innate super armour, and can combo most of his specials into his basic combo (triangle, square). This usually does around 30 to 40 percent damage on its own, which is definitely pretty powerful. His range of moves is pretty damn strong too given that it takes from both Shao Kahn and Dark Seid, usually Dark Seid’s leaping stomp and rising knee attacks, and then…well, basically everything else from Shao Kahn, including his projectile, hammer, shoulder charge and rising shoulder charge, etc. He can even combo from some specials into other specials, such as from his rising knee into his rising or ground shoulder charge, and can even combo into this from his basic combo, dealing a total of…47% damage at base level (so, square, triangle, b,f+cross, b,f+circle). Yeah, one combo from his can knock off half your health. Fair to say that he’s pretty broken. [Continued in a pinned comment]
